Story 1: Fatal Konflict Trilogy
Part 1: Sagas
Jason was weakened as he looked around the ground where he lay. He was somewhere far from home, somewhere familiar, yet he didn’t recognize anything. He saw mountains in the distance, and a beautifully still lake with the sunset reflecting perfectly. He smiled for a moment as he rose to his feet.
“You will feel death's cold embrace.”
Jason jumped as he turned toward the voice. He breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the comment wasn’t directed at him. His jaw dropped when he processed what was happening behind him.
“I am Goro! General of the armies of the Outworld and-”
His sentence was cut short by a blast of ice shot from the other man’s hands.
“What the…” Jason trailed off, not wanting to be seen. He slowly backed away as he watched the battle unfold. He felt he was far enough away to turn around, and when he did he was standing face to face with a man.
The man had a kind but authoritative manner, and he stood with confidence that made Jason feel like a coward, even though he had always believed himself to be fairly brave. The man had his arms folded across his chest, but he wore a smile on his face.
“Hello, newcomer. Welcome to Earthrealm. I am Raiden, where have you come from?”
“Uh, New York?” Jason answered with deep hesitation.
“Are you an Outworld spy?”
“A what? No, I’m just… Look, I just woke up and I was here.”
“I see. You have been sent here for a reason. It is up to you to find out why, but I will be watching closely.”
The fight had moved closer to them, and Raiden placed a hand on Jason’s shoulder. They were suddenly in the spot Jason had originally woken up in, safe from the battle.
“May I ask why they’re fighting? Why aren’t you helping? Which one are we rooting for?”
“Sub-Zero fights for Earthrealm. He will fight to the death to save our home from the Outworld warriors.”
“To the death? Why not just lock them up?”
“There are fates worse than death.”
“I don’t understand,” Jason looked thoughtfully at the man.
“We battle to save our home for the generations that come after us, because if we do not, there may not be any more generations to fight for.”
Jason looked down at the ground and contemplated for a moment, then nodded.
“I understand.” He knew this battle was just like the many battles in history he had learned about in school growing up. He had just been lucky enough to never have to participate in one.
“Why do you not help him?”
“We fight with honour. We fight with integrity. Even our opponents abide by that law. From time to time you will see battles that will merge together, but there will still always only be one opponent to face.”
Jason watched Sub-Zero with awe. He knew he could never shoot ice from his hands, but maybe he could learn some of the defensive maneuvers while he figured out where he was and how to get home.
“Could you teach me some of that?” He pointed at the battle.
“No, I have prior engagements, but I can take you to someone who can.”
Raiden turned and started walking away. Jason followed, expecting it to be a short walk. After half an hour he slowed down.
“Wait, I need a break. I have felt very weak since I arrived here.” Jason sat on a rock.
“You need sustenance. Here.” Raiden grabbed an apple from the tree and handed it to Jason. Jason bit into it, and his tastebuds were taken to a place they’d never even imagined they could reach.
“What is this?”
“Just an apple, though I imagine you haven’t eaten in a while, and so it is the best apple you’ve eaten in your life, correct?”
Jason nodded as he took two more big bites of the apple. He finished it off and held the core up.
“Where should I put this?”
“Right there. The terra receives itself and regrows.”
Jason dropped the apple core, and he watched as it rapidly composted into dirt. His eyes widened and he looked up at Raiden.
“The circle of life works beautifully when everyone strives to maintain its rhythm. We fight when we need to fight, we train when we need to train, we all find our place and work towards constant harmony. This is why our people are strong and resilient, and they will never stop fighting.”
“I wish my world were more like this,” Jason started, “minus the random kung fu battles with ice cannons and four armed barbarians.”
Raiden laughed.
Jason smiled. “It’s not common where I’m from.”
“I know your home. I think your first coach and you should get along quite well. Come on, we’ve still got a ways to go.”
“You can teleport, can’t we just poof there?”
“I can teleport, but I am also capable of walking, and this is part of your training.” Raiden turned on his heels and started down the trail again.
“Wait, it is? How? What am I learning?” Jason asked as he ran to catch up.
Raiden smiled and said nothing.
“What? Is it endurance? Patience? Am I supposed to be quiet?”
He stared at Raiden for a sign, but Raiden continued to stare ahead, smiling.
“I know. It’s an appreciation of nature. No, of everything! Life?” Jason slowed down a bit as his thoughts raced. He ran to catch up again. “I know! It’s to teach me an appreciation of the way our world works in harmony to keep existing, right?”
“We are here.”
They walked up to a wooden shack, and as they approached the curtained doorway, a muscled brunette man walked out. He looked like he should be on a movie set, not in a dojo.
“Oh, Raiden, did you bring me another stray?”
“This one found us. And he’s from New York.”
“New York, you say? Alright Mr Big Apple, let’s see what you’ve got.” He held the curtain open and Jason walked through.
As soon as he breached the threshold of the open room, Jason felt the man grab his arm, and before he could react he was on his back on the ground.
“Lesson number one, never turn your back on your opponent.”
“I thought you were my coach?”
“Rule number two, when you’re in training, everyone is your opponent.”
He advanced Jason again, but this time Jason was ready and braced himself in a block position, planting his feet and standing firm. The man eased off and smiled.
“I’m Johnny Cage, and I will be your first coach.”
“Jason.” They shook hands, then Jason asked, “first coach?”
“If you want proper training, you must learn from all of our combatants. When I feel you are ready, I will pass you to Sonya, and she will send you to Liu, and so on, until you’ve trained with us all. Then you will be ready to fight alongside us.”
“I’m not sure I can handle that. I would like to get home.”
“Well, here’s the thing, Jason. You are home. Earthrealm is our home, you just have to find your way.”
“I don’t understand.”
“You will. Now, lights, camera, action!”
“WAIT, I knew I recognized you. You’re from that movie, oh what’s it called…”
Johnny waited for it to come to Jason.
“Dragon Claw? Dragon Hand? No… dragon…”
“Fist.”
“Yes! Oh you were brilliant, you have to teach me!”
“What do you think I’m trying to do?”
“Right. Okay. Teach me your ways, master.”
Jonny straightened up.
“Okay, rule number three, no cheesy movie lines in the dojo.” He lunged at Jason, catching Jason off guard and knocked him to the ground.
“Rule number four, always be ready.”
After four hours, Jason and Johnny were in sync, and Johnny stopped the lesson.
“I’ve never said this so fast, but I can’t teach you anything else. You’re ready.”
Jason was shocked, and he fell silent for entirely too long.
Raiden appeared at the door to break the tension.
“How are things going?”
“He’s ready for Sonya,” Johnny said with a smile.
“Already, and with your instant approval?”
“What can I say, he’s a New Yorker, our hearts beat as one. He’s a cocky bastard just like me, and he absorbs the lessons almost as quickly as me.” Johnny winked at Jason. Jason took that as a huge compliment.
“Well, then, I guess we should get going.”
“Wait, old man, I just trained for four hours straight. Can I have a quick rest and some food before we walk to the next place?”
“You can eat, but it isn’t far to the next lesson.” Raiden opened the curtain, and revealed a gun range that had been assembled during his first lesson.
“Oh, well this one I might enjoy, but I should eat first. Any food?”
Johnny walked out the door and came back fifteen minutes later with a piping hot pizza and an athletically stunning blonde woman.
“Food and your coach. I figured she could eat too.”
“I can always eat,” Sonya smiled and raised a slice in the air before taking a bite.
“I didn’t expect pizza,” Jason admitted.
“I told you, bro, we’re home, just not home. You’ll understand soon enough.”
“Have you ever shot a gun before?” She asked Jason.
“Uh, well yeah, like at the gun range, and I went hunting a few times when I was a kid with my dad and uncles.”
“Have you ever killed a man?”
“Sonya,” Johnny placed his hand on top of hers, and Jason noticed the matching wedding bands,
“What?”
“It's no big deal, just want to get a feel for your experience level.”
“Well, no, I've never killed a man. I've seen dead bodies, and I've hunted game before. Now, if you'd like to know if I can shoot, that's a different story.”
“Oh? A showoff? No wonder you like him,” she directed the last part at Johnny. They smiled together and shared a thought that only they knew.
“Well, then I suppose we should finish up here and see if you can put your bullets where your mouth is.”
Jason smiled, because he knew he could impress her with his accuracy, but after his walk with Raiden and his lesson with Johnny, he knew there would be more to it than weapons training, and he couldn't wait to learn.
That's the end of part 1! Stay tuned for part 2!
